Welcome to Tsukiji, the world's largest fishmarket. Tsukiji handles an average of 2,246 tons of seafood each day. On an average day $28,000,000 worth of fish is sold here. Tsukiji supplies Japan with one third of it's fish and employs 15,000 workers. I arrived here.......believe it or not.......at 5:30 am, just in time for the daily tuna auction. The cacophony of the auctioneers' shouts, and the dim light of the market gives the place a unique atmosphere.Early in the morning, the market is a rather risky place to walk around in because of the huge number of vehicles (of all sorts and sizes) that fly up and down the narrow corridors. You can often see limping workers here , men with deformed feet and legs, who had obviously been injured in the seemingly endless maze that is the Tsukiji fishmarket. Some of the tuna seen in these photos is not exactly cheap. If the tuna is of very high quality it can sell for as much as $10,000!
