I had been sightseeing in Malaysia for only about 45 minutes before I came across a fantastic Hindu wedding. I saw a large group of people standing around holding flowers and Indian decorative objects. Of course I immediately started taking pictures of the event. A large Tamil man ( almost all the ancestors of the Indian Malaysians came from the south of India and are thus almost always very black. ) suddenly tapped me on the shoulder and said in impeccable English "Tonight there will be a large wedding feast in a five star hotel. The wedding ceremony itself will be held in this building on the fifth floor. Please attend this event." When I reached the hall in which the wedding was held my host said, "Please go up to the stage and take as many photos as you please." Needless to say that that was exactly what I did. The ceremony was simply magical. Two musicians continued playing traditional Indian music throughout the ceremony which was undertaken by about 4 Hindu priests. These men were constantly praying, pouring oil into lamps and a stove, starting small fires, waving around incense, chanting while holding the groom's hand and for some mysterious reason breaking open coconuts with very large knives. There were two really interesting parts of the ceremony. The first was when after a very loud bang brightly colored confetti started to fall in great quantities from the ceiling. The second occured near the end of the event when a large curtain was held in front of the bride and groom. The 200 or so guests sitting down in the hall could not see what was going on behind the curtain unless they came up close to the stage and bent down low and looked under it. However the relatives on the stage, the two uniformed "official " Chinese Malaysian photographers, and yours truly could see what was going on. The bride and groom were feeding each other traditional Indian desserts.
