Setsubun (the day before the beginning of spring (on the old Japanese lunar calender) is a big event here.At home many fathers wear demon masks and are then assaulted by their children who pelt them with soybeans and at the same time yell "Oni wa Soto, Fuku wa uchi" ("demons go away, good luck come to this house!") At temples (such as the Zojo temple in Tokyo where I went) famous movie stars, tv personalities , singers, sports stars etc. throw out tons of goodies (bags of potato chips, candies, beans etc.) at giant crowds. I have never felt as endangered taking pictures as I did when I was in the midst of one of these crowds taking photos. People were jumping back and forth in order to catch the flying gifts. It was like a combat sport! Posted by Picasa
