Recently there have appeared many ads for shrines on the trains here. They ask people to come to the shrines during the first few week of the new year. In Tokyo the major shrines have over 5 million visitors each during the first week of January. For a majority of the Japanese this will be the only time of the year when they will visit a religious building of any kind. Most people toss a 100 yen coin( about 95 cents) into a special box at the shrine.At the big shrines ,police officers guard these boxes and with megaphones warn people not to hit other people when they toss their coins....... So.... this is the big money making time of the year for the Shinto priests.....This ad says that you should visit their shrine for "Success in business, good health, good relations with your relatives ,etc."
